Inspiration for me comes in many packages and forms. Today I am browsing Etsy and really loving some of the finds there. I feel that every space should have a bit of whimsy vintage in it. Enjoy!

I have been searching my brain for large scale artwork solutions for a project I am working on. I recalled a time when I used to make this artwork for fun. I can’t wait to implement it in a project. So cool, so graphic and really inexpensive!

Check out Trim It Quick’s new website. I am a big big fan of this lighting system and they have launched their new website. Check out my How To Videos on all the great ways you can use Harlan’s Trim-It-Quick.
The lighting kits are really easy to use, come in a variety of great colors and can be used in more ways than just for your Christmas tree. Let me know what you think of them and of the new site!

Entry to the loft and guest waiting area
We just completed a live work loft in downtown Los Angeles for Xebec Realty Partners. They wanted a warm working loft to house their Sales Staff. They also requested a residential suite that was as luxurious as a room at The Four Seasons. We are thrilled with the results.

Color is everywhere this week. It is like all the furniture stores needed a bit of skittles in the cheerios. I love this vignette at the new Lillian August store in Greenwich, CT

So my birthday has come around yet again. Reflecting on my life and reorganizing my office; I came upon my old sketch books. This rendering was my birthday gift design for my father who said he would redo my bedroom for my 13th birthday. My bedroom growing up was quite tiny; about 10′x10′. I remember desperately wanting to fit a desk and have room to read on a bench. I came up with a solution of removing the closet doors to create a reading nook. I then asked my dad to build me a loft bed that could act as a closet underneath and have a fold down desk on the end.
It was so fun to see this sketch again. It also reminded me that I have always loved what I do and can’t think of anything else that would make me as happy.

Being a Chicago native my love the Art Institute of Chicago is second nature. I was recently asked if Chicago influenced me as a designer. I can only think of the Thorne Miniature Rooms at the Art Institute. The exquisitely detailed and perfectly scaled replica period rooms are the most amazing examples of AWESOME out there. As a child I would stand in front of each one for as long as my patient family would allow. If you are in the Chicago area; it is a must see.
Did I mention they are all in 1″ scale?

My dining room stripes are complete! I really love the way that the make an elegant yet simple statement. This is literally the only full wall of drywall I have in my home. The entire home is knotty pine that runs horizontally and I really love the way the horizontal stripes play off of that.
Artwork is so personal, I have been collecting the artwork for sometime now and it is nice to have it all gathered in one place. Creating this collage on the wall really anchored the dining table and pulls the stripes into the room.
Just in case you are wondering…I created the centerpiece from cylinder vases and my favorite new lighting product Trim It Quick.

The grand opening for Blu Long Beach was yesterday. We had the pleasure and the privilege to design the sales gallery, resident lobby and 3 models for The Kor Group and CityView.
It was a real party hosted by The Mark Company. We even got a shout out for our hard work and shook hands with Henry Cisneros who is the Executive Chairman for CityView and former Secretary of U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Our hard-work there really paid off; as the final spaces are some of my favorite! Check out the photos below…

Sales Gallery main seating area. I love the hanging lights I purchased from H.D. Buttercup in Los Angeles. The pillows are from Room and Board. The side chairs are all vintage finds that I had recovered and refinished.

Custom over sized arm chairs in a warm chevron. I loved the Buddha and Nelson Pendant. Did you know it is not good karma to have a buddah sitting directly on the floor? Always have them on propped up on something!

Slip covers for some really ugly chairs made from linen grain cloth.

The wallpaper is from Romo. The cabinet is custom and I designed it to look like other cabinets that are in the Viceroy Hotels. The desk is also custom and made from different sized baseboards stacked on top of each other and then painted gray.

The resident lobby at blu. The screen was a great find at H.D. Buttercup. I love love love the Romo wallpapered ceiling. I created artwork collages throughout the public spaces.

Stripes make me happy. There aren’t enough here in this lobby. We are going back to add more!

The models had been staged by another company, but were really flat. We spruced them up by adding a third color, painting the ceilings in this unit and adding a bit of drama.

I love the wallpaper from Schumacher. The photo collage is from a damaged Slim Aarons Taschen book.

The artwork above the sofa are left brain drawings. I love making them.

I love the warmth this shade of rust brings to this dining room.

What does the Wizard of Oz, Neuschwanstein castle, Milles Garden, Richard Serra, Shaker Chairs, Ski Flying Hills and A Frame Houses have in common? They are all part of my inspiration for my home in Laurel Canyon, CA. I have finally bit the bullet and started the journey to really decorate my home. You know what they say…the shoemaker’s family has the worst shoes. I have felt that way about my home’s decor for sometime now.
Those who know me think that I am a bit crazy to be hard on myself since the last five years of my life have been extremely busy. After some soul searching I realized there was more to my lack of personal decor than meets the eye. So I have embarked upon my journey.
The first thing that I tell my clients is to gather inspiration. Well, I have done it here for myself. I also tell my clients that your home should tell the story of your life. My husband Keith, my daughter Sasha, my dog Wilson and turtle Smalls have had some adventures and many stories to share. I want our home to be a reminder of all the amazing experiences, creative endeavours, amazing friends and cities we have visited and lived in. Over the next 4 months I will be decorating our humble Laurel Canyon home one project at a time and sharing my adventures, creativity and stories with you here. Bon Voyage and let the fun begin.

Those chic ladies over at Maihar Design know what they are doing! Melanie Ford and I did some creative brain melding back in New York City. She has now relocated to Texas and helms this amazing company with her sister Ashley.

I am so happy this Valentines Day is my 6th with my husband, but man it would be so much fun to have added Maihar’s adorable ring bearer pillows and flower girl wands to the mix. Are you getting married? Check out their stuff!
